G&M Family Market To Change Suppliers From Shurfine to Hannaford

Chances are, if you've ever traveled along Route 1A through Holden, you have passed by or likely stopped into G & M Family Market.

It's been a staple for many in the area for years, as not only a great little grocery store but also an agency liquor store, a Maine State Lottery Agent, and a spot to grab a snack with both an on-site Amatos and Dunkin's drive-thru built right in.

According to their website, they even sell hunting and fishing gear and it's also one of the only tagging and weighing stations in the area.

"We offer hunting and fishing supplies, we share our parking lot with a state-of-the-art auto fueling station, and we offer bulk pricing options such as freezer deals, in-store specials and Budget Stretcher promotions, along with other fabulous money-saving opportunities!"

But the store so many have grown accustomed to, throughout the years, will be changing a bit this summer.

The folks from G & M Family Market made a big announcement this weekend on their Facebook Page, that they have decided to become a Hannaford-supplied grocery store.

Now, to be clear, they are not selling the store. The ownership and management will remain the same. They are just changing vendors and will be getting their goods from Hannaford now.

"Some things will stay exactly as they are around here, and some will have major changes...We will have a completely new POS system, and it has been made very clear to us that it is easier if any of our customers have a gift card currently, it is much easier to use them before the switchover! So we request if you could use them up, it would be greatly appreciated! This change will allow us for access to more products, Hannaford private label, and Hannaford pricing!"

The changeover is scheduled to take place on June 8th of this year. According to management, the store will have to close from June 5th to the 7th to make the changes.

Some folks voiced concern online about what was going to happen to the employees or homemade favorites like their Whoopie Pies, and deli salads.

But management is assuring folks that those things would be staying the same.

"...we will still make our whoopie pies, and none of our employees are going anywhere. The store is not selling, we are just changing suppliers...we will have a secondary supplier to carry some of our popular items. We will still make our in-house salads in the deli."

They say the Amatos will also remain in place.

G & M management says it will be releasing more information on its Facebook page in the coming weeks, as the changeover date gets closer.

These are the long-time general stores that are spread throughout downeast Maine. The stores that your grandparents picked up milk, beer, and that night's dinner at. For years they had been filled with things like fly paper, clothes, beef jerky, and that morning's newspaper. Now, you stop by for that slice of breakfast pizza, a tasty fried chicken sandwich for lunch, gas,and a handful of lottery tickets.

They're an important part of Maine's heritage, and their numbers are starting to dwindle. But we still frequent them to pick up the day's necessities and to keep up on town gossip.

They may not be owned by the original owners, and they may not look the same as they did years and years ago. But that same hometown feeling is there, the minute you set foot on their wooden floors. More than likely the same wooden floors that your grandparents set foot on.
