Facebook was on fire this weekend with a shared post claiming a local Bangor bar visitor had been unknowingly drugged.

Bangor police said the department has received no reports of such activity, despite a claim to the contrary in that social media post.

What is especially astounding is how many people commented to the post that they were not surprised by the situation or, in fact, knew someone or had themselves experienced this as well.

First of all, being around a bunch of people with a drink is one thing that puts you in danger of being slipped a drug. Drugs can be added to your drink as a liquid or powder that would be nearly unrecognizable to detect, visually or taste wise. Plus, having ingested some alcohol you might not even notice if your drink tastes funny.

Here's what to do if you suspect you or someone you know has been drugged.

If you suspect that you have been slipped a drug...

The first thing you should do is to find a trusted friend to tell.

If you suspect that someone else has been slipped a drug...

If you notice your friend is acting unusual, it's time for you to check in with your friend and see how they are doing.

But, the most critical step for BOTH scenarios is ...

  • Call 911 immediately. Get law authority involved and find a safe place to be checked out. The Bangor Police Department has urged people to call 947-7384 in a recent post related to this issue.
  • Seek medical care and request immediate testing. You only have a few hours before the drug dissolves to know what was ingested.

If it's the next morning and there is suspected drugging...

Seek medical care immediately! Also, do not shower in case a rape kit is performed.  If rape is suspected around the Bangor area, contact Rape Response Services at 1-888-458-5599 or 1-800-871-7741. They will help guide you if you are unsure of what to do or who to talk to.

Stay safe, travel with friends and be sure you get law enforcement involved and testing done as soon as possible if there's any inkling of being drugged.
