Should Maine Rename Columbus Day?
News broke today that the City of Bangor has decided to rename Columbus Day "Indigenous Peoples' Day," and there seem to be wicked strong opinions on both sides of this issue.
What do you think?
On one hand, proponents of changing the name argue that Christopher Columbus was a rapist, a murderer, and shouldn't be venerated for "discovering" lands that were already lived in for thousands of years by native peoples.
Opponents of the name change argue that it "erases history" and shouldn't be tolerated.
Would you support renaming the holiday in your town?
