Tuesday it was announced that tax relief money will be coming to Mainers in early 2020.

The State State Treasurer, Henry E.M. Beck, Esq. has contacted local tax assessors of a new law to put money back into the hands of Maine's property owners

Office of the State Treasurer will send $100 relief payments to all who qualified in 2019 for the Homestead Exemption between January and February of 2020.

Did you qualify for the Homestead Exemption?  You would if:

  • You have owned homestead property in Maine for at least 12 months by April 1st, 2019
  • The property was your permanent residence on April 1, 2019

You did not need to apply for the Homestead Exemption in order to receive this tax relief money.  This is separate from the Homestead Exemption but has the same criteria for qualifications.  So, don't worry if you didn't apply- it should still come to you.

It is expected that 305,000 property owners will receive a payment of about $102 by January/February 2020.
