What began as a small local scoop shop has expanded to places like Portland, Washington, D.C., and even Japan. It’s built a loyal following along the way, with fans ranging from visitors to notable names like former President Obama.
The menu mixes classics like Madagascar Vanilla Bean and Sweet Cream with some seriously creative flavors you don’t usually see at your typical ice cream parlor. Blueberry sour cream, salted caramel, and maple pecan, are just a few of the sweet treats you can find on the menu, along with rotating seasonal ice cream cakes and other cool combinations.

The original shop is still in downtown Bar Harbor at 7 Firefly Lane, just a short walk from the waterfront. It’s a seasonal spot, and it’s set to open for the summer season in early May. Once they get going for the year, it quickly becomes one of the busier stops in town, especially in the evenings when people are coming back from Acadia National Park. Most customers grab their cones and wander downtown, making it more of a grab-and-go experience.
Between national recognition from Eat This, Not That and its growing reputation, Mount Desert Island Ice Cream has gone from a small Maine shop to one of the country’s standout names in artisan ice cream.
