Hi, my name is Cori...and I'm an ice-cream-a-holic. Seriously, though, I'm not a person who is prone to addiction but when it comes to ice cream, I'll be the first to admit, I have a problem.

I know I'm not alone, which is comforting. But it's difficult to live in a state where 10 out of the 12 months in a year, most people deem it too cold for ice cream. Notice I say "most people"--because I am not most people. I'd eat ice cream on a sub-zero day, no problem.

Maybe that's why, when fall comes round and all the ice cream stands start to close for the season, I feel anxious.

For instance, I was riding through Brewer with my daughter the other day, and we went to turn into DQ and realized (too late--so I looked like a total bonehead) that they had closed up shop till spring.

Gifford's has also closed for the season and Dairy Queen on Broadway will be closing for a couple of months (according to the sign on their door) on December 18th.

Some good news, however, for those who like local homemade ice cream, Fielder's Choice announced this month that it will remain open through the winter!

This weekend, they shared the good news with all the other ice cream lovers on Facebook that they plan to stay open year-round and will start with new hours this week.

"ALL our locations will be open Thursdays and Sundays from 12-8 and Fridays and Saturdays from 12-8:30. We will be closed Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays. All locations will be drive-thru only, and we will have vanilla and chocolate soft serve, as well as shakes, soft-serve all winter in addition to our regular hard serve flavors!"

Another hold-out that diehards have to fall back on is the Old Town DQ. And I've heard that Spencer's is trying to remain open into the winter this year, too. In fact, they just put up a post with their new holiday options!

For me, getting ice cream has made all of this Covid madness a little more bearable. (I know, I've been feeding my feelings. Stop judging me!)

So, my fellow ice cream fanatics, it's okay. We're going to be okay. We'll get through this winter together.

I'll be seeing you at the drive-through, I guess. We'll nod and smile, as we enjoy our crunch-coat delights and blast the heat in our cars.

The General Stores Of Downeast Maine

These are the long-time general stores that are spread throughout downeast Maine. The stores that your grandparents picked up milk, beer, and that night's dinner at. For years they had been filled with things like fly paper, clothes, beef jerky, and that morning's newspaper. Now, you stop by for that slice of breakfast pizza, a tasty fried chicken sandwich for lunch, gas,and a handful of lottery tickets.

They're an important part of Maine's heritage, and their numbers are starting to dwindle. But we still frequent them to pick up the day's necessities and to keep up on town gossip.

They may not be owned by the original owners, and they may not look the same as they did years and years ago. But that same hometown feeling is there, the minute you set foot on their wooden floors. More than likely the same wooden floors that your grandparents set foot on.
