What Is The Tallest Building in Bangor, Maine?
With the recent crowning of Portland's -- and Maine's -- newest tallest building (without a steeple), we decided to take a look at the tallest buildings right here in good old Bangor.
With some assistance from Bangor's Planning Department, we have our answers.
It turns out the tallest building (without a steeple) in Bangor is the seven-story Verizon building at 59 Park Street, just across from Bangor City Hall. The building, which was once home to the New England Telephone and Telegraph Company building, was built in 1930. It comes in 117-feet high.
Now, some others were close. Both the tower at Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center on State Street and the Camden National Bank office building at 80 Exchange Street come in between 106-feet and 108-feet high.
And did you know that just up the hill from the Verizon Building is a great spot to get a view of Bangor? The Tarratine at 81 Park Street might not be among the tallest buildings in the city, but its rooftop deck gives you a view of downtown that's Instagram-worthy, for sure.
All of those are smaller than the state's new tallest building, a $64-million apartment building at 201 Federal Street in Portland. That building is 204 feet tall and 18 stories tall.
It's safe to say that neither Bangor nor Portland are known for their skyscrapers.
To give you a little perspective, the tallest building in the United States is One World Trade Center, which is 1,776 feet tall with 104 floors. The tallest building in the world is Burj Khalifa, a skyscraper in Dubai, UAE, coming in at 2,717 feet high with 163 stories above ground.
