I remember last week seeing the first rumblings that yesterday was supposed to be insanely warm. I kept hearing buzz-worthy phrases such as "record setting" and "summer like". For that matter, originally I heard we were supposed to have a few days of it, but they started dwindling like daylight in December. It finally seemed to come down to one day. And around Bangor, it was a bit underwhelming after all the speculative chit-chat.

I'm not entirely discounting the temps we did have, and it did hit 57 degrees around midday in this area, but the sun only really came out for about an hour and a half. I would hardly classify it as the heat wave that was being raved about online and around the water cooler.

Usually this time of year, it's the opposite. We often get sucked into the hype of an impending foot and a half of snow from a Stage 5 Kill Storm, only to end up being a disappointing flurry.

To be fair, the record high temp in Bangor for February 21 is 60 degrees, set back in 1937 according to WeatherUnderground.com. The record low for the same date was -15 below zero back in 1929. That's the same kind of cold snap we had back around Christmas. I feel like I'm still trying to warm my toes up from that one.

But come on....57 degrees is barely vest weather, let alone shorts weather. Portland definitely broke their record. They made it up to 68 degrees, which hardly seems fair. But generally, life is unfair. Especially if you look at the forecast the next few days...snow/rain on Friday and Sunday this week, according to the National Weather Service in Caribou.

Ugh.

But at the end of the day, who really cares? I'm a curmudgeon, and love to point out the sad ironies of life. But soon enough, spring will be here, followed by the glowing warmth of summer, where we will all forget that winter ever existed. However, it's Maine. So no matter how hard you try not to think about it, winter will always circle back around and endlessly toy with your emotions. So toughen up Chummie, this one's not even over yet.
