The Orono Bog spans approximately 600 acres and is best known for its 4,200-foot-long boardwalk, which is open to the public. The bog stretches across both the city of Bangor and the town of Orono, with portions protected by the Bangor City Forest and land owned by the University of Maine. It was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1973.
Considered a premier destination in the Bangor-Orono area, the boardwalk offers visitors a unique opportunity to experience the plants and wildlife of a Maine bog up close. The 1-mile loop trail begins at the forested wetland edge within the Bangor City Forest. After about 800 feet, it crosses into Orono and continues through the section managed by the University of Maine.
Benches are placed roughly every 200 feet along the trail, many of which are positioned at wheelchair turnaround points, making the boardwalk more accessible for visitors who may need to take a break.
Visitors should note that dogs are not allowed on the boardwalk.
Throughout the 2026 season, a variety of guided nature walks will be offered, led by experts in fields such as ecology and conservation.
