Maine High School Accidentally Serves Dirt to Students

When dessert turns into a science experiment...

Several students at Medomak Valley High School got a very unexpected “menu item” last week after what started as a normal school science experiment somehow made its way into a cafeteria meal.

According to a public notice from the school, the incident happened during the Empty Bowl Supper, last Wednesday. Earlier in the day, students working with a teacher had been doing a science experiment involving potting soil. They baked it to sterilize it, with plans to use it later to test plant growth.

Once it was heated, the soil was placed in a foil-covered baking dish and set aside near the stove area, away from the actual food being prepared for the event. Everything was properly separated… at least at first.

But when dinner service got busy and everyone was rushing to get food out to the serving tables, the tray of soil accidentally got picked up and included with the rest of the dishes.

Three students ended up briefly tasting it, thinking it was some kind of dessert. That confusion didn’t last long. Once they realized it was literally soil, they stopped immediately and the tray was quickly pulled from the line.

School officials made clear this wasn’t a prank or anything intentional, just an unfortunate mix-up in a busy kitchen moment.

Thankfully, no one was hurt, though it’s probably safe to say nobody’s going to be asking for the “mystery crumble” again anytime soon. The school says it was an accident, and honestly, that might be the most believable part of the whole story.
