The FDA on Tuesday upgraded a recall of frozen blueberries and mixed berries sold at Publix stores to its highest health risk level.
Publix initially announced the recall on July 29th for four varieties of GreenWise organic frozen berries sold in eight states because of potential E. coli contamination.

The FDA has classified the recall as Class I, its highest risk level, meaning exposure to the affected products could cause serious health consequences or death.
Twelve E. coli cases have been reported in two states with no deaths, and the recalled products were shipped to Publix stores in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.

E. coli is a large group of bacteria that can cause severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, and vomiting, according to the FDA.
In serious cases, an infection can lead to hemolytic uremic syndrome, a potentially life-threatening condition that can cause kidney failure.

And there you have it! While the recall involving these blueberries is very serious and should be treated as such, it only affects certain states, and Maine has not been identified as one of them.
