What's with these rocks with a V carved into them? We're kinda bummed it doesn't have anything to do with V for Vendetta...

One of the first commercially successful steam railroads in the country was right here in Maine. The Veazie Railroad opened in 1836 and was in operation until 1869.

A lot of the rail bed is still visible today. A few years ago the folks at the Cole Land Transportation Museum in Bangor mapped out the original 12 mile route of the railroad. Those rocks with a V carved in them are markers of the old rail bed.

The museum has booklets available that show the path of the old railroad. A spokeswoman for the museum said 24 originally were put in place, but some may have been removed. The Cole Land Transportation Museum has old ties and rails from the track on display.
