A Winslow woman and her boyfriend have been arrested after the woman's condemned pit bulls went missing in October.

Danielle Jones, 28, and Brandon Ross, 33, were arrested Wednesday and charged with refusing or neglecting to comply with a dangerous-dog court order, according to the Portland Press Herald.

The dogs were being held at the Humane Society Waterville Area after they killed a smaller dog and seriously injured a woman last year in Winslow.

The dogs went missing Oct. 24 after the animal shelter allowed Jones to take the dogs for a walk. The Maine Supreme Judicial Court that same day upheld a lower court decision ordering the dogs euthanized.

Jones told shelter officials that the dogs slipped their leashes and ran off into the woods.

Police say phone records and text messages indicate that the couple schemed to hide the dogs and take them to an animal adoption agency in New Jersey. The pit bulls have not been located by police.

Jones and Ross are scheduled to appear Feb. 26 in Kennebec County Superior Court.
