Two Bangor police officers sustained multiple injuries Sunday when apprehending a suspect in a robbery at a convenience store on Hammond Street.

The injuries came as officers attempted to apprehend Joshua Ireland, 32, of Bangor.

Police say Ireland robbed the Corner Store at 575 Hammond Street and assaulted an employee there.

An officer located Ireland walking nearby, according to a news release from the Bangor Police Department. When approached, Ireland allegedly punched the officer in the face and ran. The officer was able to tackle Ireland, but he refused to submit to arrest. A second officer arrived and Ireland allegedly punched him in the face, also.  A third officer arrived and Ireland was taken into custody.

Ireland is charged with robbery, assault on an officer and refusing to submit to arrest.

Both officers were treated at a local hospital.
