You’ve carried her across the threshold, so this should be no biggie! Right?

The 21st Annual North American Wife Carrying Championship at Sunday River is still happening! In an effort to limit the amount spectators, it will be held on Friday, October 9th, at 11am.

It’s such a nice surprise to see this fun event not cancelled due to COVID-19 concerns, like so many other things have in the last 6 months. It won’t be done the usual way, but they will make sure it’s a safe for all participants. In a normal year, you would have two sets of competitors racing on an obstacle course style track.

This time around for safety reasons, each race will be run individually. The North American Wife Carrying Championship tasks couples with crossing a 278-yard obstacle course--over hurdles, through a watery mud pit, and up an unsteady sand hill.

Here are some updated rules for the event:

    • Masks are required at all times, except when competitors are completing their timed run.
    • Couples will race against the clock, rather than head-to-head.
    • The couple with the fastest time overall will be named the champion; there will be no head-to-head heat for the finals

You gotta love the Grand Prize for winning. The champs will receive the wife's weight in beer and five times her weight in cash. Not bad for a days work. Plus, the winners move on to Finland for the opportunity to become the world champs, next summer.
