RSU 18 Wants To Put Students To Work Cleaning The Schools

When I was in high school, I used to keep some fairly weird hours at school. I couldn't keep my drumset at home anymore, so I brought it to school, and would play it after hours. So there were days I wouldn't leave school til 5:00 or 6:00 at night. And because I either needed doors locked or unlocked, I got pretty tight with the custodians.

Dan and Tony were cool guys. They let me into the band room after classes were done for the day, and locked me out when I was done. But it looks like down in the Oakland area, they're going to take all that one step further, as they're looking to hire some students to help clean the school this fall, according to WABI - TV5.

RSU 18 includes the towns of Oakland, Sidney, Belgrade, China, and Rome. With no sports, and a lack of extracurricular activities, school officials thought this might help alleviate some of the boredom, and put some cash in students' pockets. And not a bad chunk of change either, as starting pay will be $13.25 per hour.

All the schools in the district will need cleaning, and the kids will be able to work four hours a day after school. One would imagine that many safety measures will be in place to keep students safe as they work, and that keeping the kids safe will be top priority. And, it could make students feel like they're helping out.

It gives kind of a whole new meaning to school pride, in a way. Certainly, if a kid spends a good amount of time cleaning the building, they will likely scold the crap out of anyone who messes up their work. I know that's what I'd do. Gum on the chair? Nope!! Drawing on the walls with marker? Get outta town!!

So maybe these kids will channel their inner Tony and Dan. Either way, what a story it will be later on. When they're recounting the days of the pandemic with their future kids, they'll talk about their custodial adventures, back when pretty much life was canceled, and cleaning the school was a new sport.
