Since the COVID-19 pandemic, many business owners across the Greater Bangor area say nightlife has changed significantly. Late-night crowds have become less consistent, some establishments have reduced their operating hours, and the region has seen fewer venues offering live music and late-night entertainment.

The area has also experienced a decline in places catering to younger crowds looking for weekend dance music, leaving fewer options than there were several years ago.

After briefly reopening in March, Mad Kat & Company, located at 393 North Main Street in Brewer, has once again closed its doors, this time permanently. While the business is no longer operating, the owners are now hoping to find a buyer to take over the fully equipped space.

The bar celebrated its grand reopening on March 4, 2026, but was unable to regain a steady customer base. According to the owners, the business permanently closed on Sunday, June 8, because of ongoing financial challenges and insufficient sales to remain open.

Despite the closure, the owners believe the property is ready for someone new to step in. They say they invested an additional $200,000 into the business over the past several months, including new refrigeration equipment, upgraded audio and video systems, tables, chairs, and a newly built bar.

The property offers more than 8,500 square feet of space with seating for approximately 200 guests, making it a turnkey opportunity for someone looking to open a bar, restaurant, music venue, or entertainment business.

The asking price for the business is $150,000. Anyone interested in purchasing it can email madkatsrestaurant@yahoo.com or contact Steve Markwith at 207-949-4730.

The location has been home to several businesses over the years. Most recently, it operated as Mad Kat & Company for more than four years, becoming known for its nightly karaoke, food, and entertainment. The owners had previously announced plans to sell the business in December 2024 before ultimately deciding to reopen earlier this year.

Before becoming Mad Kat & Company, the building housed Jester's, a longtime fixture in Brewer's nightlife scene. In September 2020, Steve Markwith took over the business, rebranding it as Mad Kat & Company while continuing its
popular karaoke-focused atmosphere.
