Does the voice sound familiar to you?

This morning at 6:30, rescue crews from the United States Coast Guard base in Rockland, along with Air Station Cape Cod and the Maine Marine Patrol sprang into action as a mayday call for help was received from a vessel supposedly in distress off Spruce Head.

The call received this morning that you can listen to on the @USCGNortheast tweet below features what sounds like a young man in his 20s or 30s calling out "Mayday", and stating that the boat had lost it's rudder and was taking on water.  The man then says that the pumps can't keep up with it and that the vessel would try to make it to Atwood's.  Atwood Lobster Company is located on Island Road in South Thomaston.

Both the U.S. Coast Guard and the Maine Marine Patrol spent the morning scouring the waters off Spruce Head searching for 3 people on a 42-foot fishing vessel that was supposedly taking on water.  When it was determined that no one was in distress and that no one was missing, the search was called off.

Authorities at this point are now looking into what looks like a bogus hoax call.  We find it hard to imagine that someone especially at this point would do such a thing, following the loss of four Maine fisherman off the coast of Cape Cod just last week when the 82-foot fishing trawler Emmy Rose went down in rough seas.

If you do happen to recognize the voice on the call, you're asked to call 207-741-5422.
