How many of us have taken the time to create an emergency family plan...and practice it? We have one in my family, but when I asked around, I was surprised at how many people I knew said that they would not be prepared for an emergency!

One easy way to get the ball rolling in the right direction when it comes to creating a plan, especially if you have young kids, is to familiarize your family with what the different emergency service professionals and vehicles look and sound like. That's what events like the 5th Annual Fire & Safety Touch-A-Truck Event are all about! What great opportunity to take some of the scary out of an emergency, by letting kids get up-close and personal, and hands on experience.

This year's event will take place Tuesday July 16th from 6-8PM at the Darling's Agency, Parkway South in Brewer. According to their Facebook Page, it will feature:

"Free smoke detectors and batteries - while supplies last, free coloring books, crayons, stickers, and fire hats, free hot dogs & ice cream from Darling's Ice Cream for a Cause and Touch-A-Truck with local fire & rescue vehicles!"

There is a rain date set up for the next Tuesday (23rd) in case the weather doesn't cooperate for the 16th.

Having attended events like this in the past, I can tell you first-hand that it is a really relaxed way to get both you and your kids informed about different emergency services in a fun and non-threatening way. And it kind of organically starts discussions about what you'd do in the case of an emergency, which is exactly what you want to work out in advance of one! So it's good to take advantage of opportunities like this when they're available.
