Police in the town of Jay are investigating after an incident that involved two men, an ax, and a vehicle.

The victim was taken by ambulance to a hospital and his alleged attacker, 45-year-old Kirk Smith of Livermore Falls, was arrested. Jay Police told WGME-TV that Smith had struck the 45-year-old man with an ax on Friday evening, and then fled the scene. He jumped in his vehicle and, in his attempt to leave, allegedly ran over the victim's leg. When police arrived, they found the victim with his leg elevated. Witnesses told officers that Smith was the alleged attacker. There's no word on what sparked the altercation.

Smith was charged with aggravated assault and aggravated driving to endanger, as well as criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon. The threatening charge was dropped, after the case was reviewed by the District Attorney's office. Smith was taken to the Franklin County Detention Center, where bail was set at $3,000.
