The late, great rapper has a special place in an Ellsworth families heart.

Earl Simmons, known to the world as influential rapper, DMX, tragically died last Friday, after cardiac arrest at White Plains Hospital, where he had been placed on life support. He suffered a heart attack at his home, which may be the result of a drug overdose.

DMX racked up a string of five number albums from 1998 through 2003, and was nominated for three Grammy awards. Pretty impressive, but he also was a generous guy, a fact that one family from Ellsworth remembers well.

In the late summer of 2019, when he was in Maine to perform with Wiz Khalifa at the Maine Saving Bank Pavilion in Westbrook, he just happened to be shopping at the Maine Mall in Portland, when he came across Nikki Cutchins and her family, who had traveled from their home in Ellsworth, to do some back to school shopping, specifically a new pair of sneakers, when DMX was kind enough to pick up the tab for the Cutchin family daughters.
