It’s National Donut Day…Who Makes Your Favorite?

Whether you spell it doughnut or donut (either way is correct, FYI)  there's one day each year we can all come together to celebrate the tastiness of these circular snacks! But the history of National Donut/Doughnut Day has more meaning than just an appreciation for doughy, yummy, round shaped goodness.

According to the website NationalDayCalendar.com, the day originated in 1917, to celebrate "Salvation Army Lassies, a group of women who would travel to the front lines of WWI, in Europe, and deliver home-cooked food and doughnuts to the troops.

"Home-cooked foods, provided by these brave volunteers, were a morale boost to the troops. The doughnuts were often cooked in oil inside the metal helmets of American soldiers. American infantrymen were then commonly called “doughboys.”

National Donut Day is celebrated every year on the first Friday of June. Many local bakeries mark the day with specials or even give-aways to highlight the occasion.
