What an adventure awaits you this year for a re-imagined Festival of Lights from the Bangor Rotary Club.

Every year, the Bangor-area anticipates one of the rites of the Holiday Season with the Festival of Lights parade that takes place throughout the Downtown Bangor roads, passing by the many businesses and hoards of watchers who huddle in the cold to see friends, family and local organizations participate in the annual parade.

It is a plotted, organized event that requires many hands to pull off every year.  But, this is 2020.  Having hoards of people gather is a big no-no in the middle of a pandemic.

So, what how did the Bangor Rotary Club pivot the parade tradition year?

They're making the on-lookers hit the road and, essentially, be the parade.  Several organizations, residents and municipalities took the reigns this year to decorate locations throughout the Bangor area with holiday spirit.

The Bangor Rotary created a map of 4 categories of participants for you to visit, judge and vote on as the best displays in the Bangor Area for this reimaging of the Festival of Lights.

The map has 60+ locations for you to travel to in the Bangor-area.  Here's the towns you'll be traveling to to judge the participants:

  • Bangor
  • Brewer
  • Eddington
  • Hampden
  • Hermon
  • Old Town
  • Orono
  • Orrington
  • Veazie

Wanna play? From now until January 2nd, visit all the locations between 4 PM - 8 PM to see the incredible light displays and vote who deserves to be the winners of the four categories.  Here are the four categories to pick winners for:

  • Outstanding Commercial Display
  • Outstanding Municipal Display
  • Outstanding Non-profit Display
  • Outstanding Residential Display

Organize yourself using this digital map that shows addresses of all the locations for you to visit, which category each location belongs to and even the name for each location's display.  You can even organize yourself by putting locations in a particular order that works best for your participation.  You gotta check out this map!
