Of course, just as we all get into the habit of using hand sanitizer after touching EVERYTHING, the FDA comes out with a list of hand sanitizers NOT to use, because they could be toxic!

According to the FDA website they found that the problem is coming from one manufacturer in particular:

"... any hand sanitizer manufactured by Eskbiochem SA de CV in Mexico, due to the potential presence of methanol (wood alcohol), a substance that can be toxic when absorbed through the skin or ingested. "

Some of the potential medical issues that can come up after substantial methanol exposure can be headaches, nausea and vomiting, blurred vision or even permanent blindness. There are some other really nasty possible complications including seizures, coma, damage to the nervous system or even death! So seriously, double check your sanitizer stash, ASAP! It's especially dangerous for small babies and adolescent kids.

Here's the list the FDA put out of unsafe sanitizer products. If you have any of these, you're advised to dispose of them carefully in a hazardous waste container. Don't flush this stuff or pour it down the drain, either. That's not good.

  • All-Clean Hand Sanitizer
  • Esk Biochem Hand Sanitizer
  • CleanCare NoGerm Advanced Hand Sanitizer 75% Alcohol
  • Lavar 70 Gel Hand Sanitizer
  • The Good Gel Antibacterial Gel Hand Sanitizer
  • CleanCare NoGerm Advanced Hand Sanitizer 80% Alcohol
  • CleanCare NoGerm Advanced Hand Sanitizer 75% Alcohol
  • CleanCare NoGerm Advanced Hand Sanitizer 80% Alcohol
  • Saniderm Advanced Hand Sanitizer

Of course the best way to keep yourself safe from yucky germs is still to thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water.
