Something big happened in Bangor in June of 2013.

Anyone in Eastern Maine of a certain age likely has at least one memory of the Bangor Auditorium. Whether it was a high school basketball tournament, a concert, or even the circus, the building was the backdrop for more than 50 years of community moments.

Before the doors opened to the new Cross Insurance Center, the old Bangor Auditorium had to come down. Demolition began on June 3rd, 2013, and we dug up some video footage of the iconic building being torn to the ground. I vividly remember how strange it felt watching it get reduced to rubble, especially with its sleek new replacement standing right next door.

Of course, when one door closes, another opens. In this case, it was a brand-new, modern venue that marked a major step forward for the city. It’s a clear example of how far Bangor has come over the past decade or so.

I was lucky enough to attend my nephew’s Bangor High School graduation at the Cross Insurance Center in June of 2013. It was one of the first events held in the new facility.

In the 13 years since, the venue has hosted some of the biggest names in music and entertainment, including Elton John, whom I had the pleasure of seeing there in November 2017.

As much as many of us feel nostalgia for the old Bangor Auditorium, there’s no denying the Cross Insurance Center has helped bring major events and energy to the region in a new way.
