The city of Portland is getting colorful.

The Portland Police Department and the Portland Public Art Committee are teaming up to find five artists to paint selected utility boxes in the city. The technique has been used in cities around the country. Utility boxes are often seen as a blank canvas for less talented graffiti artists. Not only does the artwork beautify the area, it has shown to reduce litter and deters graffiti in the surrounding locations.

Here in Bangor we will soon have a mural painted on the new wooden Waterfront fence. While we're at it, should we find artists to paint some of the utility boxes in Bangor?

By the way, if you or someone you know would like to design and paint utility boxes in Portland, here's the application.
