First Google parked a barge in Portland, now Apple buys a forest.

More than 32,400 acres on the Mattawamkeag River in The County is now Apple's. The land area the size of the city of San Francisco is known as Reed Forest. The land is south of Wytopitlock Lake, and on the border with Penobscot and Washington counties. The tech overlord gave an undisclosed amount of money to The Conservation Fund to buy and manage the working forestland.

Apple says they're working with The Conservation Fund to purchase working forestland around the country. Apple says the collaboration aims 'to help America’s working forests stay working forests.'

Apple is starting a campaign to supply 100% of the fibers used in its paper and packaging 'from sustainably managed forests or controlled wood sources.' Maine will now be one of those sources.

The land will maintain area forestry jobs, continue to be accessible for recreation and protect the wildlife. The Conservation Fund says the land is home to Atlantic salmon, bald eagle, northern goshawk and Canada lynx.

Apple also acquired 3,600 acres of forest along the southern coast of North Carolina.
