Tall Ships on the Penobscot River for First Time in 36 Years

Maine is 200 this year, and the lower Penobscot River will host the tall ships.

The Bangor Daily News says that the region hopes it won't be another 36 years before they return.

This summer, the Four Port Loop, with tall ships and other boats, will be at the Penobscot River ports of Bangor and Brewer, Bucksport, Castine and Searsport from July 8-14, the newspaper reports.

The Four Port Loop is part of bigger Sailing Ships Festivals happening throughout Maine to celebrate the Bicentennial. It all starts on June 26 in Boothbay Harbor, and then in Rockland for the 4th, July 2-4, before heading to the Penobscot River.

The last time tall ships went past Bucksport was 1984, before the Veteran’s Remembrance Bridge was finished being built, according to the BDN. There are so many ships planned to be there.

These ships and festivals focus on the Bicentennial celebrations, but if it's successful...it could be an annual event!
