The Bangor Fire Department is getting new thermal imaging cameras, thanks to a grant from the Stephen and Tabitha King Foundation.

Thermal imaging technology is amazing, allowing firefighters to look through a room engulfed in smoke and see a person who can't get out on their own. But the current cameras being used by Bangor Fire are 20 years old, with technology that's outdated.

So, the King Foundation is giving the department at $30,000 grant to update their equipment. WABI-TV reports the new cameras will allow firefighters to not only see through smoke, but also see someone in the water or in the woods. It's expected that the new cameras will arrive in Bangor within the next couple of months.

The Stephen and Tabitha King Foundation is a privately held non-profit that promotes strengthening communities in Maine.
