It's not been a very good month to be a mailbox here in Maine.

First, it was Glenburn, where last week a string of mailboxes met untimely ends at the hands, or blade rather, of a malfunctioning snowplow.

Then the Penobscot County Sheriff's Department put out word this afternoon that mailboxes in the Milford area of Breyer Heights and County Road had been destroyed.

"The Penobscot County Sheriff's Office is investigating a number of damaged mailboxes which occurred overnight in Milford Monday, February 14th into Tuesday morning February 15th. If you have any information as to who may be responsible for this damage please contact Deputy Sheriff Tyler Young at 945-4636."

Turns out, that same night, several residents in the neighboring town of Greenbush also had their mailboxes destroyed.

Jessica Madden was at home, at her house on Middle River Road, watching TV with her son, when the destruction occurred.

"It was hit Monday night, we heard a noise around 8:30 PM. We were just in our living room watching TV and our son said someone was here cause we all heard a 'bang' noise. They were gone by the time we looked and didn’t see anything in time. But then saw that someone on our road posted about their mailbox being hit and I went and checked ours and sure enough, it was also hit. I heard it was a darker-colored truck."

Right down the road in Greenbush lives Tiffany Conary. Her mailbox was also hit.

"My neighbors actually asked if my mailbox was damaged because they noticed theirs was. My mailbox has a broken flag and [is] slightly dented."

Conary says most of the mailboxes on the street had been hit when they went back to check.

"Maybe Around 20 mailboxes just on my road. [They hit] all on my road except maybe 5 just because there were some that were grouped together. Definitely a bat. "

Conary says mailboxes on at least two other streets were also destroyed that night.

"Cards Ridge Rd and Frothing Gill rd, maybe more."

The Penobscot County Sherrif's Office says they are working on the Milford mailbox mess, while the Maine State Police are handling the damage done to the Greenbush boxes.

Authorities ask that anyone who might have seen anything unusual in either of those towns reach out to local law enforcement.

If you have information on any of the damage done in Greenbush, you can contact the Maine State Police office out of Bangor at (207) 973-3700.
