An Orrington man, who allegedly stole a vehicle from Brewer, led police on a foot chase and jumped into icy water before being taken into custody.

Brewer Police Information Officer Jason Moffitt says officers were called to a report of a stolen vehicle from Parkway South in Brewer at around 4:30 p.m. Saturday. The vehicle was found a short time later on River Road in Orrington, where a Penobscot County Sheriff's Deputy attempted to apprehend 30-year-old Joseph Lawrence of Orrington.

The suspect took off on foot, leading police to the Mill Street area, where he jumped into the Sedgeunkedunk. Brewer Officers were finally able to pull him from the water, near the old Brookside Grill on South Main Street in Brewer, and take him to the hospital.

Lawrence was treated for hypothermia, severe enough to cause him to spend some time in the intensive care unit. He's charged with Operating Without a License, Unauthorized Use of Property, and Failing to Submit to Arrest.

This investigation included members of the Brewer Police Department, Maine State Police, Penobscot County Sheriff's Office, and Brewer Fire Department.
