It's hard to believe it's only been one week since MDI and the surrounding communities came together to put out a massive blaze at the iconic Bluenose Inn in Bar Harbor.

The incident brought fire companies from as far away as Milford and Lincoln to the island to back up local crews, as all hands on deck worked to contain the flames to the annex building of the Inn, and keep it from spreading to elsewhere.

Firefighters weren't only battling the fire, but also the icy elements, carrying heavy hoses up and down a frozen hill, from the College of the Atlantic to get water. And then later in the day, to make matters even more challenging, a water main broke in town, and they had to work around that.

Local law enforcement had their hands full rerouting traffic, and making sure everyone stayed safely away from the scene, as one-half of the Annex building had already collapsed.

But in true Maine fashion, the community rallied around the first responders, opening up space for EMS crews to stage their trucks and support personnel, sending bottles of water and Gatorade to the scene, along with meals and snacks.

Understandably, the folks from the Bluenose Inn, first battling the shock of it all, no doubt, and then what has got to be an overwhelming task of figuring out the details of what to do next, took a moment, on this one week anniversary of the ordeal, to send out their heartfelt thanks to the community around them, and to those who have shared not only their time, talents and donations to the effort to fight the fire, but to those who took time to share their favorite memories of the Inn and inject some positivity into a tragic situation.

There's no doubt that situations like this one can be devastating. It's through the support of those around them that folks draw the strength to rebuild and keep moving forward. Good on all those who helped in this situation; a great example of why Maine is not only a beautiful place to visit but an amazing place to live.

Fire struck the Annex behind the Bluenose Inn in Bar Harbor on Thursday afternoon February 10th. Firefighters from all over Hancock County responded with firefighters from Penobscot and Waldo Counties coming down to backfill the stations of those companies responding
