One person was killed and another injured when a car ran a stop sign on Leeman Highway.

Bath Police Lieutenant Robert Savary said in a media release that the accident happened at around 1:18 Tuesday afternoon. A Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by 28-year-old Travis Robbins of Rockland was traveling northbound on Route 1 and turning left onto Middle Street while a pickup driven by 48-year-old Brian Trainor of Massachusetts was driving in the other direction.

The incident reports states that Robbins failed to stop at a stop sign and was struck by the pickup. 31-year-old Sheldon Curtis of Tenants Harbor, who was sitting on the passenger-side front seat of the Jeep, was ejected and struck a concrete abutment, suffering massive head injuries. He was taken to Maine Medical Center, where he later died. Another passenger in the Jeep, 63-year-old William Gerrish of Old Orchard Beach, was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Both drivers had minor injuries.

The Brunswick Police Department and Sagadahoc County Sheriff's Office assisted in the incident. So far, no charges have been filed.

The crash is being investigated by the Bath Police Department, who say it appears, at this point, that none of the occupants were wearing seatbelts. Savary says, while it's unclear whether a seatbelt would have saved his life, it certainly would have increased his chances significantly.

"We can't stress enough that all motorists (drivers and passengers) should always wear their seatbelts," Savary said. "They most definitely save lives and it's the law."
