According to News Center Maine, Maine has introduced new legislation that would streamline universal broadband for 'most' Mainers. Of course people that live way out in the willy-whacks in the middle of the woods may still find it hard to get Spectrum to come out and hook up your lines. However, the overall goal of this bill is to bring high-speed access to underserved, smaller communities here in Maine.

The new legislation, supported by both parties, would form the Maine Connectivity Authority. The goal of the new authority would be to expand high-speed internet access to as many Mainers as possible.

According to Maine's Governor, Janet Mills,

“High-speed internet is as fundamental as electricity, heat, and water. It is no longer a luxury; it is a necessity. We need to have affordable, high-speed internet throughout our state, and with willpower, we will get there.”

According to News Center, The Governor's office went on to say that the new plan would include:

  • Effective, accessible connectivity be universally available in the state
  • There be secure, affordable, reliable, competitive, and sustainable forward-looking infrastructure that can meet future needs
  • All residents, businesses, and institutions in Maine be able to take full advantage of the economic, health, educational, and other opportunities available through connectivity services
