Maine DOT Begins Installing Cameras Along I-95 and I-295 – What Are They Watching?
The Maine Department of Transportation is getting ready to start installing traffic cameras on Interstate 295 and Interstate 95. What does that mean for drivers?
Why Are The Cameras Being Installed?
According to News Center Maine, the project will cost about $970,000. The cameras are being installed by the Maine Department of Transportation to improve Interstate Highway safety conditions. How that specifically works is unclear.
The Maine Turnpike, which is part of I-95, already has 23 web cameras that have been in place for some time on I-95 between Kittery and Augusta, which you can view online.
How Many Cameras Will Be Installed
Nine. That doesn't seem like many, does it? Here's where they will be installed.
On I-95, cameras will be installed at Exits 109 and 112 in Augusta, Exit 120 in Sidney, Exits 127 and 130 in Waterville, and Exit 133 in Fairfield.
On I-295, cameras will be installed near Exit 10 in Falmouth, Exit 15 in Cumberland, and Exit 20 in Freeport.
Work on camera installation begins on Monday, July 28, and is scheduled to be finished by October 30. The work is being done by Electric Light Inc. of Cape Neddick.
Can You Get a Ticket if a Camera Catches You Speeding?
No. By Maine State law, the use of traffic surveillance cameras to enforce traffic laws is restricted. The state and municipalities are prohibited from using cameras to prove or enforce most traffic violations. But there are a few exceptions.
If you ever accidentally went through a tollbooth on the Maine Turnpike without paying the toll, cameras will photograph your license plate, and you will likely get a reminder to pay your toll.
