Maine Deputy Hurt in Tractor Trailer Crash on 395 in Brewer

A crash that continues to block I-395 in Brewer involved a tractor-trailer and a Deputy's cruiser.

What Happened?

Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss says the crash happened at approximately 8:00 Tuesday morning. A tractor-trailer, driven by 41-year-old Kristofer Higgins of Baileyville, was traveling westbound on the on-ramp of I-395 when Higgins failed to negotiate the turn. His vehicle rolled over, taking out the center portion of the guardrail, and striking a Penobscot County Sheriff's Office cruiser, that was traveling eastbound at the time. The cruiser was driven by Sergeant Gary Decker.

Was Anyone Hurt?

Sergeant Decker was transported to Eastern Maine Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. The truck driver suffered minor injuries and was also transported to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.

How Long Will the Road Be Closed?

Officials say the tractor-trailer was carrying diesel fuel, which caused a spill. The Maine Department of Environmental Protection is at the scene and is cleaning up the fuel. The westbound on-ramp from Wilson Street and the eastbound off-ramp to Wilson Street are expected to remain closed for several hours while the cleanup continues.
