This Maine Lake Was Just Named the Best Place to Swim
While Maine is full of awesome, secluded spots to jump in the water, this one in particular was just named one of the best in the entire country!
Listen, we get it—it’s really no surprise that one of Maine’s lakes made a list like this, because we have some truly amazing spots for swimming. But if we’re being just a little biased, the real shock is that only one of our lakes made the cut.
So, with that in mind, who’s making this call—differentiating between lakes in Maine and choosing the best ones in America? And what exactly makes a lake the ‘best’ for swimming?
Reader’s Digest created their list of the ‘26 Best Lakes for Swimming in the U.S. This Summer’ by focusing on lakes that are not only beautiful, but also easy to access, clean, and safe for swimmers. They considered everything from scenic views to swim-friendly features like sandy shores, calm waters, and options for both relaxing and active fun.

Alright, now that we’ve got that cleared up, which Maine lake was recently named one of the best in the U.S. for swimming?
According to Reader’s Digest and their recent report, ‘26 Best Lakes for Swimming in the U.S. This Summer,’ making the list is Echo Lake, located west of Somes Sound and north of Southwest Harbor. Also known as Crotched Pond, Reader’s Digest had the following to say about their selection:
Though located less than 5 miles from Maine’s cliff-lined Atlantic coast, this small freshwater lake seems a world away.
In the early hours, this lake in Acadia National Park is usually covered in fog, but by the afternoon, it opens up to calm, inviting blue water.
Reader’s Digest continues, noting that thanks to a ban on boat engines over 10 horsepower, the lake stays peaceful and quiet, perfect for a relaxing swim.

And there you have it! If you’re looking for one of the best lakes in America for swimming, Reader’s Digest suggests Echo Lake right here in Maine.
