Just picture this… furniture everywhere and Swedish meatballs for everyone!

IKEA recently announced plans to open 10 new locations across the United States, investing a whopping $2 billion in the process. They haven’t announced where the new stores will be yet, but as soon as I heard the news, it hit me—there isn’t an IKEA anywhere in the state of Maine.

Right now, IKEA has 55 stores in the U.S., and the closest one to us is in Stoughton, Massachusetts, about 40 minutes outside of Boston. Wouldn’t it be amazing to have one in the Bangor area? I can already think of a few spots where it would fit perfectly. Sure, it might bring a little extra traffic to Stillwater Avenue—but having one nearby would be totally worth it.

If you’re not familiar with IKEA, they design and sell ready-to-assemble furniture, kitchen appliances, home décor, accessories, and a variety of other goods and home services.

And it’s not just furniture—every IKEA also has a restaurant and bistro. While the menu focuses on Swedish classics, it varies depending on the location. You’ll find breakfast items, burgers, lingonberry BBQ ribs, garlic-lemon cod, wraps, salads, and delicious desserts.

Fingers crossed we see IKEA setting up shop here soon. The company is expanding aggressively in 2026, with new stores planned in California, Texas, Colorado, Illinois, Oklahoma, Alabama, Arizona, and Virginia. These will include a mix of traditional stores and smaller city-center formats, designed to make IKEA more accessible to everyone.
