If you love visiting State Parks here in Maine as much as we do, then mark your calendars for this date.

Sunday, July 19th, is Loon Plate Appreciation Day here in Maine.  This means that if your vehicle is sporting a spiffing loon conservation license plate you'll be admitted free of charge to any of Maine's great State Parks and historic sites!  Free admission will be valid that day only between 9 a.m. and closing.

Hey, it's worth the extra $20 cost when registering your vehicle to support one of the 48 Maine State Parks, like Lamoine, Moose Point, Camden Hills, Cobscook Bay, and Quoddy Bay Head.  What better places to camp, hike, picnic and swim?

It takes about 30 days to score a Maine loon conservation license plate if you don't already have one, so if you don't you may be out of luck this year.  Start the process by going HERE and ordering your new vanity plate.

As you can see, the $20 goes to three various agencies that protect Maine's wildlife and lands.

  • $8.40 goes to the Bureau of Parks and Lands;
  • $5.60 goes to Inland Fisheries & Wildlife; and
  • $6.00 goes to the Bureau of Motor Vehicles.

Free admission on that Sunday does not apply to:  Acadia National Park, Allagash Wilderness Waterway (AWW), Baxter State Park, the Maine Wildlife Park (IF&W), Peacock Beach, Scarborough Beach, Swan Island (IF&W), Penobscot River Corridor (PRC) or the Penobscot Narrows Observatory in Prospect, though admission to Fort Knox State Historic Site will be free that day with the Loon Plate.
