Gene Hackman’s Last Movie Was Set In A Fictional Maine Town
The legendary movie star passed away this week
Some pretty shocking news broke on Thursday, actor Gene Hackman, 95, and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, 64, were found dead in separate rooms in their Santa Fe, New Mexico home. One dog was also found dead, while two were found alive.
The couple’s bodies were discovered during a check prompted by a neighbor’s concern. No obvious cause of death was found, and foul play is not suspected at this time, but the circumstances surrounding the incident raised enough suspicion to begin an investigation.
Hackman, was nominated for five Oscars in his career, winning in 1971 for "The French Connection", He also portrayed Lex Luthor opposite Christopher Reeve’s Superman, and starred in films like "Hoosiers" "Get Shorty", "The Birdcage", "The Firm", and many others.
He retired from acting in 2004 and has kept a very low profile ever since.
You probably don't remember the film "Welcome To Mooseport". When it came out on February 20th, 2004, it was a bit of a box office bomb, but as it turns out, it would be his last movie, but it does have a weird connection to the State of Maine.
To recover from a vicious divorce, former U.S. President Monroe Cole (Gene Hackman) retires to his vacation home in Mooseport, Maine. When the local town council approaches him to run for mayor in the upcoming election, Cole agrees. As he campaigns against his rival, Handy Harrison (Ray Romano), the owner of the local hardware store.,
Obviously, there is no Mooseport, Maine, but we are a bit of a footnote in Gene Hackman's incredible career.
