The popular diner in Ellsworth known for the Grand Slam breakfast apparently will not reopen following the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a post Tuesday on its social media page.

Denny's on High Street in Ellsworth closed back on March 26, and a posting to Facebook at that time said that it was temporary. Unfortunately, a posting today at the Denny's (Ellsworth, ME) Facebook page claims that both the Ellsworth and Biddeford locations have closed permanently. The post has since been removed.

A Denny's company spokesperson offered the following statement on Wednesday:

"The restaurants in Biddeford & Ellsworth are currently closed. We are unable to provide further information as to the length of the closures at this time."

An employee at the Ellsworth restaurant on Tuesday told the Bangor Daily News he had been informed the restaurant would not reopen.

Denny's has six locations in Maine: Auburn, Augusta, Bangor, Biddeford, Ellsworth and Portland. As of Thursday, all of the locations are still listed on the company's website. The Auburn, Augusta, Bangor and Portland locations are open.

For locals and tourists alike, Denny's in Ellsworth had turned into a mainstay since it opened, serving up burgers and breakfast.  For travelers, Denny's was a familiar pit stop. It's prime location on High Street would see over a million tourists per year either pass by or stop for food. Its Tuesday-night Kid's Night was popular with families in the Ellsworth area, and those that are a little older loved handing over their AARP card to receive 15-percent off.

One has to wonder now what, if anything, will move into the Denny's location at 75 High Street. Will it remain unoccupied?  Or, will another chain restaurant give Ellsworth a try.

While there are plenty of auto parts stores and banks to choose from in Ellsworth, those that live and work in the city would welcome more places to eat to at. We anxiously await the outcome.

In the meantime we will miss Denny's, and eating breakfast there any hour of the day or night.
