Several customers who attempted to visit a Dollar General location in Eliot, Maine on Tuesday were caught by surprise when the doors were locked and handwritten notes were sprawled on the glass explaining why the store wasn't open. Several employees had reached their breaking point and quit over long hours and low pay.

Damn Dollar General employees in Eliot really went off 😳

Shared on Facebook by Bri Blanchet, four different notes were posted on the Dollar General door that ranged from angry and frustrated to thankful and somewhat sarcastic. The notes read:

Google "general strike" and learn how we can take our power back. To our loyal customers who treated us with respect, thank you, we love you!

Closed indefinitely because Dollar General doesn't pay a living wage or treat their employees with respect

Thank you for the soda, Joe

Capitalism will destroy this country. If you don't pay people enough to live their lives, why should they slave away for you?

According to WMTW, the store was closed for several hours on Tuesday as management attempted to remedy the staffing problem. Probed for comment on the situation at the Eliot location, Dollar General refused to discuss the matter.

After the Facebook post began to circulate, one former employee explained what led her to quit at Dollar General. Hannah Barr commented under Blanchet's post with this:

My manager was working 70+ hours a week we’re getting paid for 40 salaried with no days off. I was supposed to be working 20 hours a week but they needed me working 31 with one day off a week.

Barr followed up with:

Your mental and physical health is more important than any job!

The Dollar General location in Eliot reopened hours after the closure and doesn't plan to see any interruption in their normal hours moving forward.
