The City Of Old Town has partnered with a Florida-based "micro-mobility company" called Bird, to offer residents here in Maine a chance to get around town on two wheels.

The company has partnered with cities and towns across the nation to offer an alternative to driving a car...and with the nationwide high gas prices, we experienced this summer, that could benefit many who are simply trying to travel shorter distances without wasting gas or having a negative impact on the environment.

According to Bird's website:

" Cars are one of the biggest safety hazards today. By replacing car trips with convenient options, like scooters, we can make cities safer and reduce pollution for everyone. The Bird app encourages—and incentivizes—responsible riding. We even give out rewards to riders who park in designated areas, away from public pathways. To help each city meet their unique goals, we work to deliver an app experience that includes localized education, designated no-ride zones, and more."

EJ Roach, Old Town’s Director of Economic and Community Development, says he hopes bringing the scooters to Old Town will not supply residents with an affordable and environmentally-friendly method of transportation when they need to travel within city limits, but that this new option will help bring new business and customers to Old Town.

" The eco-friendly transportation option, officially launched today,  can be activated through Bird’s free mobile phone application and used to replace gas-powered car trips when going to the store, meeting up with friends, exploring the community and taking many other daily trips."

Roach says renting a Bird scooter is set up to be a very simple process. Riders will be able to download an app to their phone, scan the scooters and be on their way. There will also be special pricing for folks with different needs in the community.

"Bird’s inclusive Community Pricing Program offers a 50% discount to low-income riders, Pell grant recipients, select local nonprofit and community organizations, veterans and senior citizens. To recognize the individuals whose work continues to be so crucial to the health and safety of our communities, Bird offers free rides to healthcare workers and emergency personnel. Those who qualify can sign up by emailing a copy of their medical identification card, name and phone number to together@bird.co. Eligible riders receive two free 30-minute rides per day."
