Maine Police Charge a Woman for the 1985 Murder of an Infant Girl

Maine State Police have made an arrest in the 1985 cold case murder of Baby Jane Doe.

Lee Ann Daigle, formerly Lee Ann Guerrette, 58, has been arrested and charged with murder. Daigle was taken into custody outside her home in Lowell, Massachusetts on Monday, June 13, 2022, and brought to Maine to stand trial.

The circumstances of the baby's death have always been chilling. Baby Jane Doe was first discovered in Frenchville, Maine on December 7, 1985. A dog found the newborn and carried her less than 700 feet to his owner's home, where the owner notified the police. State Police Troopers were able to track the dog's path back to the location where he'd found it. The resulting investigation determined Baby Jane Doe had been born and then abandoned in a gravel pit in Frenchville where temperatures had dipped below zero.

The arrest is the culmination of decades of investigative work by dozens of active and retired police officers who were determined to find the baby's mother. Ultimately, it was a combination of DNA evidence and genetic genealogy that led police to Daigle. She's currently being held in the Aroostook County Jail in Houlton and is expected to make her first court appearance on Tuesday.

Maine currently has at least 75 unsolved homicides.
