Best News Ever: Tours Of The Thomas Hill Standpipe Are Coming Back

This is the best news for Bangor since the pandemic began.

Ok, some folks might feel like I'm exaggerating, but for real, if you've never been to the top of the Thomas Hill Standpipe in Bangor, you have no idea what you've been missing. This one announcement is the kind that makes it feel like we may finally be headed towards a normal time....

Located on Thomas Hill Road in Bangor, it's literally the crown jewel of Bangor's skyline. You can see it from almost anywhere in the city, never mind being able to see it from a lot of Brewer as well. It's easily a tie with Paul Bunyan when weighing it's importance to the city. And the views from the top are unmatched.

But of course..... Pandemic.

Right away in March of 2020, tours of the Standpipe came to a grinding halt, just like everything else. Since then, almost any activity in crowded spaces has been limited in some way. The standpipe became more of a standstill. Presumably, the only people who've been up in there are maintenance crews.

But, according to a Facebook post from the Bangor Water District, the first tour of the year is scheduled for Wednesday, May 18th from 3:00pm - 7:00pm. Bear in mind, there's no elevator, so you'll need to be able to climb the 100 stairs to the top. But trust me, it's worth it. The views of the greater Bangor area are insane from the top.

Sure, my enthusiasm for this may seem a bit over the top, but we've all been waiting for little moments just like this. Little pieces of getting back to the way things used to be. Sometimes, getting things back a little bit at a time, makes you appreciate them that much more when you have them again. For Bangor, I think this is one of those things.
