Movies portray high school in all sorts of different ways but if there’s one thing they all have in common it’s that prom is going to be the best night of your high school life.

Whether this holds to be true or not, it’s still a fun and special night when you can get all dressed up with your friends and sometimes it’s the parts that lead up to the event that are the best part.

My favorite part was prom dress shopping and trying on different dresses.

While this can be exciting for some people, for others it can be stressful and disheartening if they can’t afford a new dress that makes them feel special.

That’s why the Cinderella Project was born in Maine: to promote economic stability and improve the lives of low-income residents so everyone can partake in these big events.

Cinderella Project Gives Free Prom Dresses to High School Students

The Cinderella Project of Maine gives high school students across the state the opportunity to feel and look their best without having to worry about the cost.

Three events will be held this year providing free prom dresses to all Maine high school students. The organization would like to host more events to be accessible to students across the state but they need more partners involved.

Events in Maine for Free Prom Dresses 2023:

  • Saturday, March 4 at Aroostook County Action Program
    • 3rd floor of 480 Main St. Presque Isle, ME
  • Thursday, March 9 - Saturday, March 11 at Aroostook County Action Program
    • 3rd floor of 480 Main St. Presque Isle, ME
  • Saturday, April 15 at the Wentworth Event Center
    • 139 Searsport Ave., Belfast, ME
  • Gardiner Area High School is slated to host their event on Sunday, April 2

Some of the locations may only operate by appointment only but you can contact the organization at 207-338-6809.

Last year, they gave away more than 250 new and gently used dresses to students representing 11 out of Maine’s 16 counties. They’ve been doing this since 2006, so clearly, there is a demand for affordable and accessible clothing, especially for big events that are typically expensive.

Prom Dress Donations

The Cinderella Project has partnered up with Day’s Jewelers throughout Maine, so you can drop off a prom dress to any of their locations. If you have or know anyone who has a prom dress hanging in the closet collecting dust, help someone in need and donate the dress.

This is an incredible idea and I’m glad there’s this resource out there for those who need it.
