Honestly, though, Maine is one of the safest states as a whole when compared to the rest of the country, even taking the top spot for safest states in this 2021 list from worldpopulationreview.com.

In fact, the crime rate for the state has dropped for the ninth straight year, according to the Bangor Daily News per a report from the Maine Department of Public Safety. Additionally, the crime rate has decreased by more than 50 percent since 2011.

Alarms.org also noted that Maine’s violent crime rate is less than a third of the national rate.

So while, yes, there is still crime in the state, including violent crimes, you're probably going to be OK no matter where you live or choose to live in Maine, especially when compared to many other locations in the United States.
