The “Social Security” Call Scam Is Driving Everyone Mad This Week
Since Tuesday, I've received 2 dozen calls from an "Unknown" number. It comes up on my phone the same way, each time.
When I answer it, a recording of a woman's voice comes on saying "The Social Security Administration has been trying to get in touch we me with a very important message..."
8 of those calls (so far) have happened today alone! And they seem to be taking place during prime stressed-out times of the day, when I'm in the thick of trying to get my work done!
To say they're driving me bonkers is an understatement.
And when I mentioned this issue on Facebook, I was surprised to see so many of my friends were going through the exact same thing today:
"I hate that! Those scumbags are calling me too."
"It actually helps that you shared this, as it's been my fate as well for the past week. I'm pretty comfortable just ignoring call after call after call, but it's nice to know I'm not alone in this misery!"
"Me too!!! At least 7-8 calls a day. Every day. For a week. I won’t lie, I’ve taken to cursing at them and threatening to call the police on them. They hang up every time. When I yell at it, it connects me to a person. And I yell more. "
Well, scammers...as annoyed as I am (make no bones about it--added to the already technically challenge suck-sandwich of a day that has unfolded at my house, this has been enough of a disturbance to make me want to eat a tub of ice cream in the shower, and cry) knowing I am not alone in this misery has in some strange way helped me feel less "murdery" as I call it.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not happy to know my friends are going through the same level of annoyance as I am, but sometimes, when everything around you feels like it sucks, to know there are others who "get it" is almost a relief.
So, if you're one of the many getting spammed by phone calls this week...take heart in knowing you're not alone.
In fact, one of my friends says she's been screaming at the phone when she picks it up, and that has made her feel better. I might have to try that myself.
