They're a tell tale sign to a sailor of any sort that land is near, and a familiar sight to those that work the sea for a living or sail it for pleasure.

They're also a tourist destination.  Maine's familiar landmarks that dot it's many miles of rocky coastline.

We can't help think of a time gone by, when Maine's waters were used to transport goods like granite and lumber to urban areas like Boston and New York.  Back then there wasn't any radar or GPS devices, and the lighthouse was a beacon of hope.  A sure sign that a ship's destination was near.
