A man accused of forcing his way into an 84-year-old Sidney woman's home was taken to the hospital after being shot in the chest by the victim's son, police said.

Police responded around 7:10 p.m. to a report of a possible home invasion in progress at a home on Lyons Road.

When police arrived, they found one man with a gunshot wound and another with a severe head injury.

Police told WGME a woman who lives at the home, Audrey Hewett, told them an individual, later identified as Dreaquan Foster of Providence, Rhode Island, knocked on her door and asked to use the phone.

When the woman refused to let Foster inside, he allegedly forced his way into the home.

The woman retreated to her bedroom and called her son, Eric Hewett, 47, who lives next door.

When the son confronted the intruder, Foster attacked the man, striking him on the head with a blunt instrument, police said.

Foster continued to attack the son until the son shot the intruder with a handgun he was carrying.

The two men were transported by ambulance to MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta.

Their conditions were not immediately available.

The woman was not hurt in the incident.
